JAMES TURRELL

As our final for studio, my class was assigned clients to create a space in the third floor of the Gatewood building at UNCG. We had to include storage, bed area, entertainment, display wall, and work space. My client is James Turrell. he is an artist who focuses on light insulations and anything light related. most of his work is also geometric shapes. to start, I drew different cubes and triangles to try and come up with an idea.
then I chose this drawing as my favorite design to represent James Turrell and what he would like.


the above three images are my sketch models that I created to come up with a more final plan. as you can see, each one has a curve on the top and raised above the ground.




the above images are of my final model. I took out the curve to create more simplicity for james turrell. I also have an orange square going through the center to tie in the entertainment with the bedroom space. the space will be located in the southeast corner of the studio. it will be made out of mostly wood. also, the reason I raised the platform off the ground is to raise james turrell's view directly avobe the wall that lies in the studio. that way James Turrell will get a sense of being outside.


this is my final board and model for presentation.

My presentation went very well in my opinion because I was able to back up all of my design choices. I did everything in James Turrell's space for a reason.

ELSEWHERE

Elsewhere is an artist collaborative located in downtown Greensboro. in order to experience the overwhelming effect of walking into a place like this, I have drawn different things shown below.This is a drawing I did of my space that I blocked off in elsewhere. I used a "sketchy style" because the whole place seems to portray that type of style. there are so many items that it is nearly impossible to draw every single detail in the space.
This is a photo of the space that I drew. in my opinion, my drawing is more successful than the photo of showing exactly what the space is about because the style I used is slightly more chaotic.
Last, I drew details in the space, because I felt that when looking at the space, my eyes would narrow in on one object that had memories for me. some of these detail objects I used to have as a child, and I feel this is what makes Elsewhere so unique.





The details I drew also needed some color, because elsewhere focuses on color quite a bit. therefore, I did a before and after of color on two objects. The objects with color are more successful because they portray the feeling of being in elsewhere. everything is a different color and my eyes always narrow in on objects with the most color.

Being in Elsewhere was a really great experience for me because I started looking at art differently. In high school, I stuggled with the idea of "what is art" and elsewhere seems to be a place that takes you out of the ordinary "art" style and gives you a different interpretation of art.
